Five Local Walks in Gloucester That Will Make you Want to Return Again and Again

Jeffrey Dawson February 22, 2022 Reviews Leave a Comment

Gloucester is a place that is great for people who love to have access to both plentiful facilities and natural beauty and countryside. With many more people shunning the busy city lifestyle, places like Gloucester estate agents TGRES have high demand for properties in the local area.

Although Gloucester is a city, it is very much on the smaller side, and it is easy to get to some beautiful places for a walk. Here are just a few places to enjoy in the local area…

Beechenhurst – The sculpture trail in beautiful Beechenhurst is set in the heart of the Forest of Dean. It celebrates the history and heritage of the local people that have worked in the forest since the iron age, mining was the main industry of the area for centuries. It also celebrates the natural beauty of the plants and animals that make up this ancient woodland and the sculptures draw to your attention the many things that make up this unique and beautiful area.

May Hill – Overlooking the Forest of Dean, this locally well-known summit with its distinctive clump of trees is a beautiful place to enjoy a walk. It has long been a local landmark and walking up here is so rewarding – breath-taking views across Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties. From here you can also walk down into Huntley woods – this is particularly beautiful in May when a carpet of bluebells adorns the forest floor.

Gloucester and Sharpness Canal – This canal was built during the industrial revolution when Gloucester Docks became the most inland port in Britain and was an important place for transport. Walk from the docks where the old Victorian warehouses still stand proudly around the water’s edge, and head down the canal. You can cycle or go on foot and will see an array of waterfowl as well as the boats heading up and down the canal.

Standish Woods and Haresfield Beacon – This is a great place to go where you can combine a beautiful woodland walk with the beautiful views that can be seen from Haresfield beacon. The woods are home to many species of native trees, and are stunning all year around, but particularly popular during autumn when they light up in all the colours of the season. From Haresfield beacon you will have a good view over the city of Gloucester and the surrounding countryside.

Robinswood Hill – In the suburbs of Gloucester is Robinswood hill as well as the country park. This is a great place to come and spend time as a family – on sunny days it is a popular picnic spot, and in the winter it is a great place to take the kids (and adults!) out sledging. It is also great for dog walkers. Head through the trees up to the summit of the hill where you will be able to see for miles around, and on clear days you will be able to see over to the black mountains in Wales!
