Camellias are probably one of the most beautiful flowering shrubs. They offer us a very remarkable flowering in autumn and spring seasons. Planting, care and pruning of camellias will help to improve growth and prevent possible diseases. Their care is simple, as you’ll see in the following lines.
Plantation camellias
It is recommended to plant camellias mainly in the fall season to promote good rooting and better flowering in the early months of the year. In spring we can plant camellias acquired in pots, although they require regular watering the first few weeks.
The species that bloom in autumn or winter can be planted without problems until spring. A clear example of these is the Camellia sasanqua, also called Camelia autumn.
For planting heather mixture 1/3, 1/3 and 1/3 compost garden soils, abundantly watered and placed in winter mulch to protect the roots from the cold.
Camellias need a regular watering during the first two or three years, especially in case of high temperatures and also to create deep roots in the soil.
Planting potted
It is very easy to grow camellias in a pot, something ideal for those who may have a terrace or a large balcony. To do this you must choose a pot of sufficient diameter and the perforated bottom to prevent accumulation of water.
Create a bed of gravel or clay balls for perfect drainage. It is important to avoid stagnant water in the roots, which could kill your camellias. Fill the pot with a mixture of heather and horticultural land or planting. Watering should be regular in case of extreme heat, but not excessive in order to keep the soil moist.
Your camellias can stay from 2 to 3 years in the same pot, but must be changed regularly to give them room to grow. As we say the transplant will take place every 2 or 3 years, providing a pot of slightly larger diameter. Heathland add to fill the space.
Pruning camellias
The slow growth of camellias not require a prior any pruning. However if you want to balance or reduce the branches of your camellias, you must wait until the end of flowering. Beware it because they bloom can take place in autumn, winter or spring, depending on the variety. It is therefore important to know the period in which our camellias bloom not to cut them before they appear.
