The plants with blooms hibernates them are not many. Among the most beautiful and colorful blooms we can definitely put the queen of winter, that is, the Camelia Sasanqua. The Camelia Sasanqua belongs to the Theaceae family and is native of territory of China and Japan. It is an evergreen shrub that can be expanded or erect, much branched, with pale green and small leaves.

This particular specimen of Camelia is often remembered as Camellia Christmas; in fact we have already mentioned that this is exemplary with a bloom that occurs during the cold months, this fact takes place from autumn to continue until the month of March. We have already mentioned that the Camelia Sasanqua finds its origins in Asian territories, and it is from the Japanese name (i.e. Sazanka) that derives the Latinized consideration Sasanqua. Also in the Japanese tradition the leaves of this variety of Camellia are used to make tea, it is extracted from the seeds instead of a useful oil in cooking and cosmetics.

Europe comes only from the nineteenth century, long after his more famous relative, that is, the Camelia Japonica.

Cultivating the Camelia Sasanqua

This particular specimen of Camellia prefers a soil type of acid. In the case of clay soil, it is necessary to improve the soil structure itself in order to make it suitable for planting camellia; to do this, you can use organic materials, such as peat, leaves, ripe compost and manure. Also, to maintain the draining soil, it is always advisable to lay on the bottom a good amount of expanded clay. If the soil is chalky, it must be replaced entirely using in place of the specific soil for acidophilic plants, only in this way the plant will survive.

Place the plant in a place where it can enjoy as long as possible to the ambient light, but try to avoid direct sunlight; this fact can damage the plant, causing burns.

The camellia is a rustic plant, it is therefore not particularly sensitive, and it needs too much care to grow in luxuriant manner. It for this reason that this plant is able to withstand even harsh winters; it can survive temperatures of 10°C without suffering any kind of damage.

One caveat should be taken if you decide to grow this plant in pots: it will be appropriate to protect the vessel that houses with cardboard, or we advise you to spread onto the soil a generous layer of bark.

This camellia fits easily at low temperatures but cannot stand the heat. When the temperature exceeds 32°C are required, in addition to abundant watering, repeated sprays with non calcareous water. The use of lime water can give rise to the yellowing between the ribs of the leaves, it comes to iron chlorosis, or you may notice dark spots, in this case it will instead of the absence of magnesium; this is due to the fact that the constant use of lime water causes the poor absorption of many trace elements necessary for optimal vegetation. the advice is to try to keep the moisture content of the plant, only in this way will not enter into suffering.

With the arrival of flowering, it is good to provide the additional nutrients with the sample, so it is advisable to add to the ground a specific fertilizer for acidophilic plants. As always it is good to wait for a sunny day to make this work. Another tip is to always be attentive to the stagnation of water in the saucer.

As regards the care this camellia does not need pruning, in addition is provided with surface roots and not too large, then not be necessary to place it in too large vessels.

Attention to diseases and pests

Despite the camellia is a rustic and rather hardy plant is necessary to pay attention to pest attacks. Among the parasites that usually affect these specimens there are aphids and Scale insects. These pests are easily visible to the naked eye, then just treat the plant with specific products.
